Syd Mead Shape Study

For our second 2D assignment we were asked to do a simplified shape study of some of the works of legendary concept artist Syd Mead, I chose one of his sleek car designs to focus on

Overall I really struggled with this one, I think I'll likely revisit it to touch up on mistakes I'm seeing as a continue to review it.  I think I'll try making rough 3D model of the shapes in order to get a better visual understanding of how to shape the forms more convincingly.

3D 8bit Link


Use the SK_Mannequin to compare the standard player character (6ft) to your object in Maya to properly establish scale, freeze all transformations, and delete history before exporting

Add a nice bevel to the properly sized cube (10 units), soften the edges, and export as a FBX













Import the FBX to Unreal













Set up your material to any specifications you may need for the project, these can be turned off later, so no need to worry if you add too much functionality











Create Instances of your material to easily make changes to any objects assigned to it












Begin construction of a very high resolution cube construction of your 8bit Link













Don't forget the other side! Remember to rotate that Directional Light for easier building













Change that directional light to a nice maroon, much nicer than the stark white













Add a very subtle green ambient light to really bring the contrast out in the whole thing, and there you have it, your very own 3d model of 8bit Link!
